Deputy Minister of Industry (Wamenperin) Faisol Riza said the decision to impose a 0 percent tariff for almost all goods in the United States (US) would be a challenge for the national industry.

This was conveyed by Faisol in his remarks at the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) of the Potential for Domestic Railway Development which was monitored online through the Ministry of Industry's YouTube, Friday, July 25.

"What President Trump is doing is trying to make the world market open to America with a pressure of 0 percent. Everything that is done for the American industry can enter the global market, including domestic markets, of course this is also a challenge," said Faisol.

Faisol did not deny that in the era of President Prabowo Subianto's leadership around 9 months, many countries were competing to strengthen their respective industries, including one of which was done by the United States (US).

"Really on a 9-month journey, yes, the new government is led by President Prabowo Subianto, the reality that exists in today's world today that the race to build this industry is happening everywhere, including what President Trump did," he said.

Moreover, said Faisol, President Prabowo Subianto said that Indonesia's economic growth of 8 percent could only be fulfilled through contributions from the non-oil and gas processing industry.

"Mr. President (Prabowo) emphasized time and time again that 8 percent of economic growth can only be fulfilled through industrial sector donations, especially the non-oil and gas processing industry," he said.

Therefore, Faisol asked all parties to work together with the government to strengthen the domestic industry, especially to deal with new trade policies that will be implemented by the US.

Because if it is not done, Faisol is worried that the Indonesian industry will lag far behind other countries and only become a market for goods from abroad.

"Although in terms of experience, manufacturing value added, all of us are below, but if we are careless for a moment we can (industry) be left behind by them. That's why today, FGD activities are being held so that we can answer continuously what the industry needs," he concluded.

Previously, US President Donald Trump announced that import rates for Indonesian products entering America would be set at 19 percent. The decision was said to be the result of direct negotiations between him and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

"Indonesia will pay a 19 percent tariff to the United States for all imported goods from them to our country," Trump said in a statement monitored from his social media account, Truth Social.

The 19 percent figure indicates a significant decline from the initial 32 percent rate that Trump first announced in April 2025.
