RI Imports US Agricultural Products Worth 4.5 Billion US Dollars, Minister Of Agriculture Amran: No Problem

JAKARTA - Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman ensured that the trade agreement between Indonesia and the United States (US), which includes imports of agricultural products worth US$4.5 billion, would not interfere with the national food security program.

He also did not worry about the import agreement, as long as during imports it was carried out selectively and based on real needs.

"I don't think it's a problem. For example, corn, if we are sufficient, then we don't import it. There are recommendations from agriculture. So this is a very good position," he told reporters while attending a Kagama event at the RRI Office, Jakarta, Thursday, July 17.

According to him, the main commodity in the agreement is wheat which has not been produced commercially in the country and has been the main raw material for the national food industry for a long time.

"So, wheat, that's the biggest (imports from the US according to the trade agreement between RI-US). However, we are grateful, because the tariff from 34 (percent) becomes 19 (percent)," he said.

Previously, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that the import rate of 19 percent would be applied to Indonesian products entering the US.

Meanwhile, exports from the United States to Indonesia will not be taxed. This decision is based on the results of direct negotiations he made with the President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto.

"Indonesia will pay a 19 percent tariff to the United States for all imported goods from them to our country," Trump said regarding the agreement reached with Indonesia in terms of import rates, as monitored from Truth Social social media in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

The new value shows that an agreement has been reached to reduce US import rates for Indonesian products from the 32 percent mark first announced by Trump in April.

In addition, as part of the deal, Trump said Indonesia is also committed to investing in a number of American products.

"Indonesia has committed to buying 15 billion US dollars in US energy, 4.5 billion US dollars in American Agricultural products, and 50 Boeing Jets, many of which are 777," he said.
