JAKARTA - Indonesia Mining Industry Holding MIND ID affirms its commitment to supporting the national sustainability agenda by targeting a 21.4 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.
Division Head of Sustainability MIND ID Binahidra Logiardi said that the company is committed to continuing to strengthen operational performance in order to support strengthening the national industrialization ecosystem.
"As a state-owned mining company, we are committed to supporting the government's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The total energy requirement of the MIND ID Group is estimated to increase from 48,000 TJ (terajoule) in 2023 to 266,000 TJ by 2030. This increase will be in line with the expansion of national downstream strategic projects in all mineral commodities managed.
The MIND ID Group GRK emission in 2023 was recorded at 4,100 ktCO2e and is expected to increase to 31,060 ktCO2e by 2030. However, with the transformation efforts carried out by all MIND ID members, GRK emissions targeted to decrease by 21.4 percent from GRK business-as-usual emissions by 2030.
However, Binahidra ensured that expansion would continue to be carried out in accordance with the best practices of the sustainable mining industry, as well as supporting the achievement of the Indonesian Government's enhanced nationally determined contribution (NDC) target by 2030.
Binahidra explained a number of concrete steps that have been successfully implemented by MIND ID members, including fossil-based fuel substitution to cleaner energy, such as the HSD (High Speed Diesel) conversion to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) on the Baking Plant INALUM. This step has reduced emissions to 3,700 tCO2e per year.
Furthermore, the use of biomass (such as palm oil shells) as a substitute for coal in one of Antam's subsidiaries has also succeeded in reducing emissions to 560 tCO2e per year through co-firing technology.
Optimization of processes through the innovation of coal handling and digitalization methods is also carried out, including replacing excavators and dump trucks of diesel-fueled coal with electric-powered rocket wheel excavators (BWE) for coal handling activities, and being able to reduce emissions by 5,200 tCO2e per year.

MIND ID is also developing a decarbonization strategy through a nature based solution (NBS) based approach, the use of Renewable Energy Certificate (REC), and the development of a carbon trading scheme as part of a GRK emission offset strategy.
