JAKARTA - The rebuilding of the Terban Market in the city of Yogyakarta has attracted the attention of the central government, considering its strategic role as a chicken and slaughterhouse trade center (RPH) which will be converted into more modern, hygienic, and environmentally friendly.

This revitalization not only restores the long-standing function of the market, but also adjusts to the latest sanitation standards and waste management.

Deputy Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Diana Kusumastuti, said that the concept of developing the Terban Market prioritizes the principles of cleanliness and efficiency, especially because this market will be equipped with poultry cutting facilities.

"I really emphasize the importance of the sanitation system, from drainage to waste management, both organic and inorganic. The building must be good, but the cleanliness must also be maintained," Diana said in Jakarta, Sunday.

This market is built on an area of 7,838 square meters, with a building area of 4,493 square meters and carries a Green Building (BGH) approach. This concept emphasizes energy efficiency, natural air circulation, and the use of environmentally friendly materials.

He also requested that the technical aspects be considered in detail, especially in open market areas so that when it rains it does not cause puddles due to tempias.

"Because green buildings have many openings, it is necessary to pay attention to the slope of the floor and the water storage system so as not to cause inundation in the market," he said.

In terms of progress, the construction, which began on September 18, 2024, has reached 60 percent and is running according to plan. This market will later have three floors and accommodate around 505 traders.

This revitalization was carried out as a follow-up to the damage caused by the subsidence land that occurred in 2021. This project was financed using the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) worth Rp55 billion, with the project implementer being PT Abadi Prima Intikarya, and supported by the consortium PT Arss Baru PT Intimulya Kencana (KSO) as a construction supervisor consultant.

Terban Market will again function as the largest poultry center in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and its surroundings, as well as becoming a modern traditional market that prioritizes buyer comfort and saleser efficiency.

This step is also in line with the policy of the Ministry of PUPR to revive traditional markets as a center for the people's economy through improving facilities and management.
