Deputy Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Wamen KP) Didit Herdiawan stated that the Red and White Village Cooperative was a concrete step launched by President Prabowo Subianto to build the economy of coastal communities.

The Red and White Cooperative is part of the national movement to build the village economy from below. We are reviving the spirit of mutual cooperation and economic sovereignty," said Didit as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, April 25.

He conveyed that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) fully supports the independence of the village economy, especially in coastal areas through accelerating the formation of the Red and White Village/Sub-District Cooperative in accordance with Presidential Instruction Number 9 of 2025.

Didit said, the program is the 6th Astacita, namely building from the village and from the bottom for growth, economic equity, and poverty alleviation.

The government targets the formation of 80,000 Red and White Cooperatives throughout Indonesia.

"In this case, the KKP has the mandate to foster and form 2,921 cooperatives consisting of new cooperatives, strengthened existing cooperatives, and revitalized suri-dead cooperatives," said Deputy Minister Didit.

He said that until now, the KKP has recorded around 20,000 groups of marine and fishery business actors that have the potential to be developed into the Red and White Cooperative.

In addition, there are 921 existing cooperatives assisted by the KKP, consisting of 636 active cooperatives and 285 inactive who can be transformed into the Red and White Cooperative.

In an open discussion session, KP extension workers from various regions voiced their commitments.

From west to east, Padang (West Sumatra), Salatiga (Central Java), Tabanan (Bali), South Konawe (South Sulawesi), to Papua, the extension workers expressed their readiness to become the front guard in encouraging the formation of village-based cooperatives in accordance with the characteristics of their respective regions.

In accordance with the mandate of the Presidential Instruction, the KKP through marine and fisheries counselors is responsible for providing guidance, assistance, empowerment and facilitation to groups of fishermen, fish cultivators, processors, marketers of marine products, and salt farmers, so that they can become part of the Red and White cooperative.

It is known that the number of existing cooperatives assisted by the KKP, including Cilacap, Lombok, and Palembang, has begun to develop an integrated cooperative model.

The Red and White Cooperative will have a strategic business unit that supports the basic needs of the village community, including: basic food outlets, cheap pharmacies, cold storage, fertilizers, savings and loan units, to marine products logistics.

In addition, cooperatives are also directed to manage marine sector commodities such as people's salt, seaweed cultivation, capture fisheries and sea products processing.

Previously, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono expressed the importance of the Red and White cooperative to build a sustainable blue economy in coastal areas.

The existence of cooperatives makes every fisherman, cultivator, and coastal community have access to a strong economic institution.
