JAKARTA - Entrepreneurs who are members of the Indonesian Furniture and Crafts Industry Association (HIMKI) are optimistic that Indonesia's furniture industry exports can grow 8 to 12 percent this year.

Chairman of the Indonesian Furniture and Crafts Industry Association (HIMKI) Abdul Sobur said the target transaction installed was at US$2.1 billion or equivalent to Rp34.21 trillion (at an exchange rate of Rp16,294 per US dollar).

Furthermore, Abdul Sobur said the target installed had also taken into account the current geopolitical conditions.

"With such turmoil, it should be able to reach 8 percent to 12 percent of the growth in 2020. It should have reached 2.1 billion US dollars, yes, until the end of 2025," Abdul said at the 2025 Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX) press conference, at JiExpo Kamayoran, Jakarta, Sunday, March 9.

This figure, continued Abdul Sobur, is outside the export target of handicraft products which is estimated at US $ 800 million or equivalent to Rp. 13.03 trillion.

"If we rely on the craft, we just have to add an additional 800 million US dollars, plus the furniture is at 2.1 billion US dollars," he said.

Abdul believes there are still opportunities for exports of Indonesian furniture products in the midst of trade wars that occur between the United States (US) and China.

The reason, continued Abdul, the high import rate for China could actually make the US economy advance. Meanwhile, the US is the largest market for exports of Indonesia's furniture industry, where the figure can reach around 250 million US dollars each year.

"So if the United States experiences growth, there is a tariff given to China, it seems good (for demand from the US)," said Abdul.

On the other hand, Abdul admitted that currently there is news that Indonesia will be subject to an import rate of 20 percent by the US. Even so, he admitted that he did not know the cause of the imposition of the tariff.

However, Abdul Sobur emphasized that this issue is quite a concern, because Indonesia does not yet have a trade agreement with this superpower.

"I asked directly, to the Minister of Trade (Budi Santoso) who came here, (the answer) there was no (US import rate) sir, but indeed the tones are, Indonesia can be charged tariffs, only rumors," concluded Abdul.
