Good News From Minister Of Industry Agus Gumiwang: Starting Next Year, Indonesia Will Produce 1,000 Electric Cars

JAKARTA - Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita appreciated PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) for being the first automotive industry company in Indonesia to produce electric vehicles in March 2022.

Furthermore, Agus said that in the early stages, Hyundai Indonesia will produce as many as 1,000 units of electric cars per year.

"This will certainly be a showcase that the Indonesian automotive industry has moved towards an environmentally friendly industry," he said in a written statement, quoted Wednesday, October 27.

According to Agus, the production of electric cars also sends a message to the international community that Indonesia is ready to become the main export hub for electric vehicles in ASEAN and the surrounding region.

Agus also advised companies to apply Industry 4.0 technology in all production lines, and involve SMEs as part of the company's global supply chain.

Furthermore, Agus also wants Hyundai Indonesia to establish an academy or polytechnic whose graduates become workers with abilities according to industry needs to after-sales of electric cars.

"All of Hyundai's real actions in building the KBLBB industry in Indonesia are expected to spur investment from other automotive industries to develop KBLBB in Indonesia. The creation of the KBLBB ecosystem certainly requires an active role from industry players, battery manufacturers, charging station infrastructure manufacturers, and community involvement," he said.

For your information, the Ministry of Industry targets the production of electric cars and electric buses in 2030 to reach 600 thousand units, which is projected to reduce fuel consumption by 7.5 million barrels and reduce CO2 emissions by 2.7 million tons.

This step is in line with the Indonesian government's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29 percent by 2030, as stated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at COP21 in Paris in December 2015.
