JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has diverted the budget for the construction of a new dormitory at the Indonesia Paralympic Training Center (IPTC) Karanganyar, Central Java, to build the Education Building and Sports Court (GOR) phase II.
The decision was made because the current dormitory capacity was considered sufficient for the needs of athletes, so the construction of additional housing was not a priority.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said the plan to build a new dormitory was officially postponed after his party reviewed the latest needs of the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPC).
Dody ensured this during his visit to Karanganyar, Monday, June 15.
"The dormitory that is now still somewhat empty. Instead of building something that is wasteful, it happens at the same time that NPC asks us to build an Education Building. So, our dormitory status is postponed, we will be converted into an Education Building. Later, when the dormitory is full, we will build it," said Dody as quoted from a written statement, Wednesday, June 17.
The Education Building is planned to have a capacity of around 400 people.
In addition, the PU Ministry will also continue the construction of the second phase of the training center which is intended for the doubles sports branch.
According to Dody, the new facility is needed to support the development of Paralympic athletes who continue to grow.
"This new training center will be dedicated to the doubles sports, such as sepak takraw and futsal," he said.
Not only that, the government also included the construction of a skybridge (sky bridge) as one of the priorities.
The infrastructure will connect between buildings in the IPTC area, making it easier for athletes and staff to move.
"We will definitely build a skybridge. So, later so that friends don't have trouble moving to other places," he said.
Apart from accessibility, the PU Ministry also pays attention to the reliability of electricity supply in the area of the disabled athlete's national team.
For this reason, the provision of hybrid generators is again prioritized after it was previously delayed due to the addition of electricity quota.
According to him, the existence of generators is an urgent need considering that power outages still often occur in the area.
He revealed that when the electricity went out, the evacuation process for disabled athletes on the upper floor had to be done manually because the elevator could not operate.
"If the electricity goes out, the athletes are evacuated manually. Officers are lifted because the elevator cannot be used," said Dody.
He targeted that all construction of additional facilities could begin this year.
To accelerate implementation, the government will not re-tender, but extend the work contract with the previous project implementer through the addendum mechanism.
"Bismillah, this year. We, we just extend the old work contract. In terms of budget, from the current determination it is still enough. The target is, to peel and solve everything we need about a year," he said.
The IPTC was built with a budget of IDR 421.9 billion on an area of more than 80,000 square meters with a total building area of 34,346 square meters.
The complex consists of a GOR 1 building with an area of 17,482 square meters and a dormitory building with an area of 16,864 square meters.
The athlete's housing facilities are two apartment towers four stories high with 188 rooms with a capacity of up to 392 athletes.
IPTC is also equipped with various international standard sports facilities, including the main swimming pool, heating pool, recovery pool, boccia arena, shooting arena, table tennis and wheelchair table tennis.
Then, badminton, weightlifting, blind judo, football field, 400 meter track and field facilities to long jump, high jump and shot put.
The existence of the training center is expected to be a means of training Indonesian disabled athletes so that they can train more professionally and competitively.
Until now, the limitations of facilities have often been a challenge in developing the achievements of national Paralympic athletes.
With increasingly complete and integrated facilities, the government hopes that IPTC can become an international-level Paralympic training center as well as support the birth of new achievements for Indonesia in world sports events.
