JAKARTA - The government will conduct a thorough evaluation of the national railway operations, especially safety aspects, following the accident involving the Commuter Train (KRL) and Long Distance Train (KA) at East Bekasi Station, last night.

Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency (BP) who is also Danantara COO, Dony Oskaria said the evaluation will cover various operational aspects, with a main focus on improving safety.

"But unfortunately, yes, it cannot be avoided, once again we apologize that we will soon conduct a thorough evaluation of both the operations of our trains and especially everything related to safety," Dony told reporters in Jakarta, Tuesday, April 28.

According to Dony, one of the things that will be evaluated is related to a piece of crossing. Moreover, it is recorded that there are 1,800 crossings that are considered still in need of improvement.

"Because we realize that there are approximately 1,800 crossings that we must improve the quality of," he said.

Dony said that this evaluation step has also become a concern for President Prabowo Subianto. The government, he continued, has prepared an additional budget of Rp4 trillion for the improvement of a piece of crossing.

"Earlier, Mr. President had conveyed that there would be an additional Rp4 trillion. It will later be combined with the railway budget and SOEs will also participate in the safety commitment for all road users, both on the train and on the road users who pass through the crossing," he said.

Dony said the current government is also still focusing on handling victims, including ensuring health facilities and compensation from Jasa Raharja and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI.

"I have asked KAI to provide compensation and so on. This is a form of our grief," said Dony.

Previously, the Minister of Transportation (Menhub) Dudy Purwagandhi revealed the chronology of the initial incident of a train collision in East Bekasi last night. He said the incident began when the Bekasi-Cikarang relationship KRL series hit a car at the crossing of a piece of JPL 85.

Dudy said that as a result of the incident, the KRL series had to be evacuated and designated as an Extraordinary Journey (PLB) with code 5181 because it stopped serving and running outside the regular schedule.

As an impact, continued Dudy, officers stopped another series of KRL with the code PLB 5568 leading to Cikarang on the platform of East Bekasi Station. However, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train (KA 4) Jakarta-Surabaya relationship did not stop completely so that it was involved in an incident with the PLB 5568 train which was stopping.

Dudy emphasized that the Ministry of Transportation fully supports the investigation process carried out by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) to uncover the exact cause of the accident objectively and thoroughly.

"We also give the opportunity to the KNKT to conduct an objective investigation," said Dudy.

Dudy also expressed his deep condolences for the deceased and hoped that the injured would recover soon, while emphasizing that this incident was an important lesson for all parties to continue to improve transportation services, which also prioritize safety as the main priority.

"This train accident is a very important lesson for PT. KAI and us, to provide the best service to the community, but also to provide a sense of security and comfort, as well as the most important safety for passengers," said Dudy.
