JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is building 105 units of suspension bridges in the 2026 Fiscal Year (TA) which are spread across 25 provinces throughout Indonesia.

The development is aimed at improving community connectivity, especially in rural areas and areas with limited access due to geographical conditions.

The construction of the suspension bridge is part of the Community-Based Infrastructure Program (IBM) implemented by the Directorate General of Road Construction of the Ministry of PU.

Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said that the suspension bridge was a solution to provide fast and efficient access in the area.

"The suspension bridge provides direct benefits for the community. Mobility becomes easier, the distribution of agricultural products is smoother, and access to public services is more open," said Dody, quoted from a written statement, Saturday, April 25.

The program is focused on areas with geographical challenges, such as being separated by rivers, ravines, and hilly contours.

In addition, the determination of the location of construction is carried out through technical evaluation and field surveys by considering the level of community needs, the condition of isolation of the region, transportation access, and the potential economic benefits generated.

The spread of the construction of the suspension bridge shows the government's efforts to encourage the equalization of development to the outermost, lagging and leading regions (3T).

One of the provinces with a fairly large allocation for development is Central Java which received 16 units of suspension bridges in a number of districts.

The bridge will connect villages that were previously separated by rivers and other geographical conditions, thus supporting community mobility and distribution of local production.

Technically, the suspension bridge that was built has an average span of 40-120 meters with a width of about 1.8 meters. The design is adjusted to the local geographical conditions with strong, efficient, and easy construction for maintenance by the community.

The PU Ministry ensures that every construction is carried out by prioritizing safety aspects, construction quality, and resistance to environmental conditions.

In addition to being a physical link, the suspension bridge is also expected to become a node for local economic drivers and strengthen social interaction among people in previously isolated areas.
