JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) announced that the Italian energy giant ENI has found a giant gas reserve or a giant discovery.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, said that the results of the Geliga-1 well exploration in the Ganal Block, off the coast of East Kalimantan, revealed the potential of gas resources of around 5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) and 300 million barrels of condensate.
"This finding is in the Ganal Working Area (WK) operated by Eni with a 82 percent ownership share, while the remaining 18 percent is owned by Sinopec," Bahlil said in a press conference at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Office, Monday, April 20.
According to Bahlil, this finding is a positive signal for efforts to strengthen the domestic energy supply in the midst of increasing needs.
The exploration involving the Italian energy company, ENI, confirms that Indonesia's oil and gas potential is still very large, especially in the Kutai Basin, East Kalimantan, which continues to show promising prospects.
Bahlil also expressed his appreciation to Eni for the success of the discovery, and provided evidence that Indonesia still has great opportunities to optimize its oil and gas potential as a support for national energy resilience and efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency.
"This is the result of exploration and after this they will also do drilling to explore other areas besides the East Kalimantan area," continued Bahlil.
He explained, in 2028, the peak production that Eni could achieve was 2,000 MMSCFD, far outstripping its current production of around 600 to 700 MMSCFD.
This will continue to be improved until 2030, the production will be developed to 3,000 MMSCFD.
"This (discovery) is a giant. In addition to gas, we also find that in 2028, we produce condensate of approximately 90,000 barrels. And in 2029-2030 it can increase to 150,000 barrels a day (from the ENI-managed Work Area)," he explained.
Bahlil is optimistic that, along with the increase in Eni's production, in line with the government's strategy to be able to meet the domestic gas needs, and the increase in condensate production will also reduce oil imports.
The Geliga well was drilled to a depth of about 5,100 meters at a water depth of about 2,000 meters.
This discovery extends Eni's record of exploration success in the Kutai Basin, after previously finding large reserves in Geng North in 2023 and the discovery of the Konta-1 well in 2025.
The results of this discovery confirm the significant potential of the gas system in the basin and the stability of resources in this region.
The discovery of Geliga occurred after the final investment decision or Final Investment Decision (FID) for a number of gas projects, namely Gendalo and Gandang (South Hub), as well as Geng North and Gehem (North Hub).
For its development, the North Hub project will use a new floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) facility.
Its capacity reaches 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day (bscfd) and 90,000 barrels of condensate per day (bpd).
In addition, this project will also utilize existing facilities, including the Bontang LNG Plant.
In addition to Geliga Well, Bahlil also conveyed the findings before the Geliga well, namely the Gula Well, which produced gas of around 2 TCF and 75 million barrels of condensate.
From the two wells, the initial estimate of the Geliga and Gula resource combination has the potential to generate additional production of up to 1,000 mmscfd of gas and 90,000 bpd of condensate.
In addition to having an impact on increasing national oil and gas reserves, the discovery of jumbo gas in the Ganal Block also opens up opportunities for accelerating the development of integrated gas infrastructure.
Eni is currently evaluating a development scheme that is synergistic with the North Hub project and existing facilities such as the Bontang LNG Plant, in order to accelerate the monetization of findings and optimize added value for the country.
