JAKARTA - Trade Minister Budi Santoso admitted that he was optimistic that the national textile ecosystem was resilient in facing various global challenges due to the current geopolitical situation.
"The ecosystem in Indonesia is good, from raw materials to downstream, yes, it means we can compete. We are not too worried about foreign products," said the Minister of Trade, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, April 16.
He said this in response to concerns about production constraints in the domestic textile industry and the potential for flooding of imported textile products following the impact of the recent Iran-US-Israel war.
The Minister of Trade also admitted that the price of energy commodities, which is now more volatile, has a significant impact on the sustainability of production in various industrial sectors, including domestic textiles.
However, he believes that national textile industry players are resilient because they are supported by a complete ecosystem, ranging from raw materials, factories, distribution, designers, to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in this sector.
"Yes, but most of the time when it comes to textiles, the ecosystem in Indonesia has been running well," said Budi.
"Now the oil price is up, yes. So yes I think it's normal (to have an impact on the textile industry), but this is indeed a global crisis. All (affected), not only Indonesia. All are affected by this Middle East war. Yes, but when all are affected, yes we are ready to compete," he added.
In addition, continued Budi, the domestic market demand he valued was also still high for the textile sector.
"So there's no need to worry, the industry continues, the domestic market is already very big," he said.
Not only a large demand in the country, Indonesian textiles and textile products (TPT) are also attractive to the international market.
This sector throughout 2025 showed positive growth of 3.55 percent year-on-year (yoy) and generated export value of US$ 12.08 billion and a surplus of US$ 3.45 billion.
"So in addition to the potential in the country, exports are quite good. The quality is quite good. If the quality is good, has competitiveness, we can control imports," said Budi.
