JAKARTA - Minister of Transportation (Menhub) Dudy Purwagandhi projects that the movement of passengers on the 1447 Hijriah/2026 Masehi Lebaran transportation will decrease by around 1.7 percent compared to the previous year, from 146.4 million people to around 143.9 million people.

Dudy said the projection was obtained from a survey conducted by the government before the implementation of Lebaran transportation to map the potential movement of the community and prepare national transportation facilities and infrastructure.

"In this year's survey, the number of people who will move (projected) is 143.9 million people. If faced with a survey, there is indeed a decrease of 1.75 percent (compared to the previous year)," said the Minister of Transportation as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, March 7.

This survey was carried out by the Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology (LAPI ITB), Bandung Central Statistics Agency (BPS), and the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) to get a more accurate picture of the potential for community mobility during the Lebaran transportation period.

In its implementation, the survey involved around 55,000 respondents from various regions in Indonesia to obtain representative data related to people's travel patterns ahead of the Eid al-Fitr celebration.

Dudy explained that in the previous year's survey, the number of people who were estimated to travel reached around 146.4 million people during the Lebaran transportation period throughout Indonesia.

However, based on datamobile positioning in the realization of 2025, the number of people who actually travel was recorded at around 154.6 million people or higher than the results of the initial survey.

Therefore, the Ministry of Transportation continues to anticipate the possibility of a surge in community movement at Eid this year which may exceed the projection of the results of the survey that has been carried out previously.

"As we have experienced in the past, there is a spike between the survey and realization, so we must anticipate if there is a spike with a different number from the survey," said Dudy.

According to him, most Indonesian people still make the Lebaran momentum as the main time to go home and celebrate Eid al-Fitr with their families in their home areas.

However, there is also a new trend where some people use the long Lebaran holiday period as a momentum for travel or vacation with family.

Dudy said that around 50.60 percent of survey respondents stated that their trip was made to celebrate Eid al-Fitr in their respective hometowns with their families.

Based on the origin of the province, the five regions with the most number of travelers are West Java, DKI Jakarta, East Java, Central Java, and Banten as the origin of the journey.

Meanwhile, the most popular travel destinations for people during the Lebaran period are estimated to be Central Java, East Java, West Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and South Sulawesi.

In terms of origin cities, the five regions with the highest number of movements are East Jakarta, Bogor, Bekasi, South Jakarta, and West Jakarta as the starting point for people's journeys.

The five main destination cities that are expected to be tourist destinations are Kebumen, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Banyumas, and Bandung during the Lebaran homecoming period this year.

The Ministry of Transportation also noted a large movement from the Jabodetabek region with the main origin of Bogor, Tangerang, East Jakarta, Bekasi City, and Tangerang City to various destination areas.

"This is a movement within the Jabodetabek area. It seems that the peak is in Bogor Regency with Cianjur being one of the favorite destinations," said the Minister of Transportation.
