JAKARTA - The government is strengthening various transportation safety measures ahead of the 2026 Lebaran homecoming flow, which is predicted to involve up to 143.9 million people or about 50 percent of the total population of Indonesia.
Director General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation, Aan Suhanan, said the government had conducted vehicle legality checks or rampchecks on thousands of bus fleets since February 23, 2026.
"This year, as many as 143.9 million people will travel home, that is about 50 percent of the population, so a series of arrangements and policies are needed. Since February 23, 2026, rampchecks have been carried out, as many as 13,584 bus units have been inspected," Aan said in an official statement, Thursday, March 5.
Of the total vehicles that have been inspected, 8,680 units or 63.90 percent were allowed to operate. Meanwhile, 2,844 units or 20.94 percent received a warning for repairs, 1,645 units or 12.11 percent were prohibited from operating, and 415 units or 3.06 percent were fined and prohibited from operating.
Aan emphasized that safety inspections would continue until March 29, 2026 at various strategic points such as Type A Terminals, bus pools, rest areas, toll exits, and accident-prone areas.
In addition to fleet supervision, the Ministry of Transportation has also opened a free homecoming program to reduce commuters who use motorcycles, which are considered to have a higher risk of accidents.
"In addition, the Ministry of Transportation also opened a free homecoming quota in the hope of reducing motorcyclists through the free homecoming program with a quota of 110,112 people by bus, train and sea vessels and 12,140 motorbikes transported by trucks and trains. This is what we are trying to do because traveling far by motorcycle will be very potential to cause accidents," he explained.
On the other hand, the government has also implemented the Work From Anywhere (WFA) policy to help disperse traffic density during the homecoming and return period. The policy is valid from March 16-17, 2026 for the homecoming flow and March 25-27, 2026 for the return flow.
According to Aan, the implementation of Lebaran transportation requires collaboration from various parties, ranging from ministries and agencies, SOEs, the private sector, to the community.
"To prepare for the implementation of this Lebaran transportation, synergy and collaboration between K/L, SOEs, the private sector, and even the community are very necessary so that smooth and safe togetherness can be realized," he said.
Aan said the government together with the Ministry of Public Works and Korlantas Polri had also issued a Joint Decree (SKB) which regulates the restriction of goods transportation and traffic engineering such as one way, contra flow, and odd-even systems.
"The rules for restricting freight transportation are carried out for the safety of millions of people who will go home and not to limit business but to regulate so that community mobility and the distribution of goods can run smoothly and safely," said Aan.
In addition, the government also continues to monitor the readiness of the homecoming route, carrying out road repairs at the provincial and district/city levels, and improving safety at various transportation nodes.
"Coordination with various parties is needed to form better synchronization between policymakers in the smooth implementation of the 2026 Eid Transportation," he said.
