JAKARTA - Indonesia affirms its commitment to be part of the solution to global climate change by encouraging a green transition in the maritime sector.

The government seeks to reduce emissions and build a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable marine transportation system.

Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi conveyed this in the Indonesian Candidate Diplomatic Reception as a Member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Category C for the 2026 '2027 Period which was held in Jakarta, Friday, November 7.

Dudy said that as the largest archipelagic country in the world, Indonesia has a big responsibility to maintain the safety of shipping and sustainability of the marine environment.

Under President Prabowo Subianto's vision and aspiration, he continued, the government strengthened good maritime governance and expanded international cooperation in shipping safety, marine environmental protection, and increased maritime human resource capacity.

"Since joining the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1961, and continuing to serve in the IMO Council since 1973, Indonesia has remained steadfast in upholding global standards for safety and security at sea, marine environmental protection, sea welfare, and capacity development through close collaboration with other maritime countries," Dudy said in an official statement, Friday, November 7.

Dudy said, Indonesia continues to ensure the highest safety standards at sea by improving maritime communication systems and integrating IMO instruments into national policies and regulations.

"Indonesia is also actively supporting maritime decarbonization efforts through the implementation of the B40 biodiesel program, the use of LNG-fueled ships, as well as the development of LNG-electric hybrid technology and renewable energy projects such as green hydrogen and bioethenol," he said.

Dudy also conveyed that a number of important achievements were achieved by Indonesia during Indonesia's membership period at the IMO Council for the period 2024 to 2025.

Among them are the full implementation of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Sunda Strait and the Lombok Strait since 2020 which improves shipping safety, as well as the determination of Nusa Penida and Gili Matra as Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) by IMO in October 2024.

In the port sector, Indonesia has implemented the digital Inaportnet system in 264 ports according to the FAL Convention and built an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) facility at large ports to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"Indonesia also provides training on Training of Trainers (ToT) and Training of Examiners (ToE) IMO Model Course for West and Central African countries, as a form of support for developing and small islands," he said.

For this reason, Dudy hopes that IMO member countries will continue to provide support for Indonesia's candidacy as members of the IMO Council for the period 2026 to 2027.

"We are ready to strengthen the role of IMO and advance a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient global maritime sector through commitment, collaboration, and concrete actions. Let's together navigate towards a more sustainable and just maritime future," said Dudy.
