JAKARTA - PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) revitalizes fertilizer factories that are old, so that production costs can be more efficient or there is no waste.

Pupuk Indonesia Corporate Secretary, Adi Perwira, during his visit to Karawang Regency, West Java, Thursday, November 6, conveyed that the revitalization of the old fertilizer factory was in accordance with the spirit of efficiency being intensified by the government.

He said that there are seven projects to be worked on until 2029, one of which is the revitalization of old fertilizer factories.

The efficiency carried out is in reducing the ratio of energy consumption to the standard or world average.

"So, if efficiency is indeed how we reduce the energy consumption ratio. So, this energy consumption ratio has a world standard. We want to ensure that the energy consumption ratio in the Pupuk Indonesia Group can be close to the average in the world in the range of 24 MMBTU (Million British Thermal Units) per ton," he said, quoted by Antara.

It is stated that currently, it is running to update the oldest factory of PT Pupuk East Kalimantan (PKT) and the Pusri IIIB Factory revitalization project to replace Pusri III and IV which are no longer efficient in energy use.

The Pusri IIIB project starts in December 2023 and is targeted for completion within 40 months, with full operational estimates by 2027.

Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan during a visit to Pupuk Kujang encouraged the old Pupuk Kujang factory to be revitalized immediately, for efficiency and supporting the government's goal of achieving food self-sufficiency.

"The Pupuk Kujang factory was built in 1975. So it is 50 years old," said Zulkifli Hasan, who is usually called Zulhas after a plant tour at Pupuk Kujang, Karawang Regency, West Java, Thursday.

He said, if you imagine with bus transportation, Pupuk Kujang is currently still using a bus made in 1975. Meanwhile, other parties have used the latest made buses, in 2025. This condition makes it inefficient.

Zulhas said that the fertilizer factory PT Pupuk Kujang is now 50 years old. While ideally the operation of a factory is between 15 and 20 years old.

However, he appreciated the fertilizer factory which continues to fully support the food self-sufficiency program.

Zulhas said that currently the government is asking Pupuk Indonesia to produce fertilizer efficiently.

He ensured that the efficiency of policies carried out by the government at this time kept the subsidies provided at IDR 44 trillion.

"Currently, a market-to-market policy has been taken. So, our subsidy remains at IDR 44 trillion, with a market to market, yes, the money can be used to buy raw materials and so on. Now Pupuk Indonesia can make one factory every year. Then the savings can provide a 20 percent discount (subsidy price is down 20 percent)," he said.

It is said, to build a new factory, it can spend around Rp. 8 trillion. So with a subsidy budget, he believes that Pupuk Indonesia can build new factories and revitalize factories, with the efficiency policy implemented by the government.
