BANDUNG The Ciliwung-Cisadane River Basin Center (BBWS) strengthens the flood monitoring system by expanding the digital sensor network along the main river flow in the Jabodetabek area.
This step is part of the Ministry of Public Works' policy to accelerate disaster mitigation and protect vital economic support infrastructure.
Head of BBWS Ciliwung-CisaANNE David Partonggi Oloan Marpaung explained that the sensor system functions to detect rainfall and increase in water discharge in real time.
With this technology, the potential for flooding can be anticipated earlier before it has an impact on economic and social activities of the community.
Before the disaster occurred, we were able to detect the potential for high discharge in the river. Our sensors are spread across various points and report conditions quickly," David told reporters in Bandung, Tuesday, November 4.
According to him, the early warning system will send automatic reports when rainfall is recorded above 60 millimeters per hour, which is categorized as very high and has the potential to cause flooding.
"If it's above, we'll immediately be on standby. The team will immediately prepare mitigation steps in the field," he said.
Until now, BBWS Ciliwung-Cisadane has operated around 50 digital sensors spread across a number of strategic points in the Ciliwung and Cisadane rivers.
Although the number is still limited, the government is targeting the expansion of the sensor network to cover all river flows in Jakarta and West Java.
Efforts to improve this monitoring system are considered crucial considering that floods often cause significant economic losses.
