JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has strengthened the national cultivation fisheries sector for one year of President Prabowo Subianto's administration. Two cultivation fisheries programs have been designated as National Strategic Projects (PSN) that are ready to boost main commodity production.

The two PSNs are the development of the Nila Salin (BINS) cultivation modeling in Karawang Regency, West Java, as well as the construction of an integrated shrimp pond (ISF) covering an area of 2,000 hectares in East Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Director General of Fisheries Budi Daya Tb Haeru Rahayu said that the construction of BINS Karawang continues to show significant progress. Assistance and program handling are carried out intensively through coordination with BPKP and the Attorney General's Office (Jamdatun and Jamintel).

"Physical development is currently still ongoing, including printing ponds, installing geomembranes, construction of sea and freshwater intake and installing electric poles on the pool map," Tebe said in an official statement quoted on Tuesday, October 28.

The BINS Karawang project is targeted to produce productivity of 84 tons per hectare per year, with a production volume of 11,150 tons per year. In addition, the program is expected to be able to open 500 new jobs for local workers.

Tebe added, based on One KKP Data, national tilapia production has shown an increasing trend in the last three years, from 1.35 million tons in 2022 to 1.5 million tons in 2024 (very temporary figure).

Apart from Java, KKP is also working on the ISF area in East Sumba, as an effort to equalize development outside Java. The project is projected to strengthen Indonesia's position in the world's shrimp market, whose market value is estimated at US$ 140.4 billion in 2034.

The ISF pond area in East Sumba is targeted to be able to produce 75,364 tons of shrimp per year, with an economic value of IDR 5.27 trillion. The project is also predicted to create more than 5,000 new jobs.

As with the contribution of shrimp farming models in Kebumen Regency or the Kebumen Regional-Based Shrimp Cultivation (BUBK), Tebe said, the ISF pond area is also expected to be able to encourage an increase in national shrimp production.

"We are optimistic that the ISF pond area in East Sumba will be a game changer for the development of aquaculture in eastern Indonesia," he concluded.
