Freeport Announces Finds All Workers Trapped In Dead Conditions

JAKARTA - Freeport Mc-MoRan (FCX) announced the latest news regarding the evacuation of 5 workers trapped in the Grasberg Blok Cave (GBC) underground mine. In a written statement, FCX management reported that it had found 5 workers dead.

Management reported that the five victims were found on Sunday, October 5, 2025. Previously, PTFI had found two victims on Saturday, September 20.

"PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) found five members of the missing team, unfortunately found dead," wrote the management, quoted on Monday, October 6.

Chairman of the Board of Directors Richard C. Adkerson confirmed that General Freeport would conduct an investigation into this incident to investigate similar incidents in the future. On the same occasion, he also expressed his condolences to the families of the 7 victims.

"We mourn the loss of seven of our co-workers in this tragic incident and extend our sincere condolences to the families who have lost loved ones," the management continued.

FCX also reported that in the incident there was a flow of wet material of 800,000 originating from former open mining Grasberg and quickly spreading to several mining levels, including the level of mining services where the seven team members carried out development activities.

"To prioritize search, mining operations in the Grasberg mineral district have been temporarily suspended since September 8," management continued.

Freeport is also conducting an investigation to identify the cause of this incident. Freeport claims this incident has never happened before in the history of PTFI's GBC mining operations for decades.

This investigation also involves external experts to analyze the root causes and provide recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. In addition, PTFI will also involve the government to review these incidents and operational plans in the future.

"PTFI estimates the investigation will be completed by the end of 2025," the management continued.
