JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Development (IPK) Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) highlighted the standard construction of buildings due to the collapse of Al Khoziny's Islamic boarding school (Ponpes) in Sidoarjo, East Java.
According to AHY, it is important for all parties to comply with the standard of building a safe building so as not to collapse and cause casualties.
He said he had coordinated with the Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo regarding the incident.
AHY admitted that he was saddened because many of the students at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school died due to the collapse of building materials.
"I think this is something very serious. We really have to deal with it in the future so that it doesn't happen again," AHY said when met after attending The 54th EAROPH Regional Conference 2025 entitled "Transforming Urban Landscapes: Driving Progress, Innovation and Sustainability for Global Futures" at the Cikini Hotel, Jakarta, Monday, October 6.
Agus stated that the condition of the victims was very difficult to save because many were squeezed and pinched by the rubble of the building.
"This means that we really have to comply with construction standards, physical development. Don't then take victims anywhere," he said.
Reflecting on the incident, AHY ordered local governments (Pemda) and related ministries to check infrastructure buildings so that similar incidents do not happen again.
The checks start from school buildings, hospitals to public facilities to actually have strength in their physical buildings.
"The SOP exists because it has become the result of research and has been proven. We are guarding this, so that there are no more incidents that take such victims," he said.
Previously, the prayer room building at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School collapsed on Monday, September 29, and caused hundreds of students who performed congregational prayers to be trapped under the rubble of the building.
The incident took place in the middle of the renovation of the prayer room building on the third floor.
More than 400 search and rescue officers (SAR) immediately evacuated victims, but the process was not easy considering large debris was prone to collapse and could hit survivors who were still trapped.
