MedcoEnergy Lowers Emissions By More Than 1.5 Million Tons Of CO2e

JAKARTA - PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MedcoEnergi) recorded a decrease in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of Coverage 1 and 2 of more than 1.5 million tons of CO2e compared to the 2019 basis year.

This number exceeds the company's target for 2025, which is 1.08 million tons of CO2e or equivalent to 20 percent of the total 2019 basic year's emissions.

Director & Chief Operating Officer of MedcoEnergi Ronald Gunawan said this emission reduction was part of MedcoEnergi's long-term plan, which targets GRK Coverage 1 and 2 Net Zero in 2050, as well as Coverage 3 by 2060.

"In its implementation, the company carries out a number of initiatives, including efficiency and emission reductions implemented in all operating areas, both in Indonesia and international assets," he said, enin, August 4.

In 2024, MedcoEnergi implemented 43 initiatives in various assets with the peak of annual GHG emission reduction reaching 181,727 tonnes of CO2e. The largest contribution comes from flare avoidance activities in Corridor Block, which amounted to 53,713 tonnes of CO2e.

Emission reduction is also obtained from optimizing the production process for the efficiency of gas fuel use, and reducing methane gas emissions. In the offshore region, solar panels are used to support energy needs at several platforms at the South Natuna Sea Block B and Sampang Blocks.

The use of solar panels is also applied to onshore asset operations in Indonesia. Converting the use of generators to electrical systems is carried out in Oman, Grati Facilities (East Java), and Rawa Gas Plant (South Sumatra). In addition, the use of biodiesel has been implemented for supply ships in Thailand.
