Trump's Resipprocal Tariff Threats Have No Impact, Indonesia's Exports To The US Continue To Grow

JAKARTA - The threat of the President of the United States (US) Donald Trump to impose a high reciprocal rate of up to 32 percent on Indonesia in April did not shake Indonesia's export performance to Uncle Sam's country.

Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Agency (BPS) Pudji Ismartini said that during January to June 2025, Indonesia still recorded a trade surplus with the US worth 8.57 billion US dollars.

This figure increased compared to the same period the previous year which amounted to USD 6.45 billion.

"Until June 2025, Indonesia's trade balance with the US is still in surplus," he said at a press conference, Friday, August 1.

For your information, although Trump had announced plans for a reciprocal tariff last April, the policy had not yet been implemented because it was still in the negotiation stage for 90 days with partner countries, including Indonesia, until July 2025.

Furthermore, Trump lowered the tariff for Indonesia to 19 percent and planned to impose it in August 2025.

Even so, the US is still opening up space for negotiations so that the tariff can be lowered further.

Meanwhile, during the first half of this year, the value of Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports to the US also increased significantly to reach 14.78 billion US dollars, or grew 11.52 percent compared to the same period last year of 12.25 billion US dollars.

Pudji menambahkan, kajian lebih lanjut masih diperlukan untuk mengetahui secara pasti dampak dari kebijakan tarif Trump terhadap perdagangan Indonesia-AS, termasuk apakah hal tersebut mendorong eksportir dalam negeri untuk meningkatkan pengiriman produknya ke pasar AS selama masa negosiasi.

"Kami perlu melakukan kajian lebih lanjut untuk melihat dampak tarif Trump ke neraca perdagangan Indonesia ke AS," ujarnya.

Meanwhile, the value of Indonesia's non-oil and gas imports from the US also increased, although not as high as exports, which amounted to 4.86 billion US dollars or grew 6.84 percent compared to the same period in the previous year 4.55 billion US dollars.

Pudji added that further studies are still needed to determine the exact impact of Trump's tariff policy on Indonesia-US trade, including whether it encourages domestic exporters to increase the delivery of their products to the US market during the negotiation period.

"We need to conduct further studies to see the impact of Trump's tariff on Indonesia's trade balance to the US," he said.
