The Ministry of Industry noted that the export value of the pulp and paper industry in Indonesia reached 8.09 billion US dollars until February 2025.
In detail, the pulp industry contributed USD 3.56 billion to the national economy, while the paper industry reached USD 4.44 billion.
"This positive performance also contributes to the provision of jobs with the absorption of direct workers as many as 288,000 people and labor does not directly reach around 1.2 million people," said Director General of Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry Putu Juli Ardika in a written statement, Wednesday, June 25.
Therefore, the Ministry of Industry continues to strive to maintain the availability of industrial salt in supporting production activities in the pulp and paper industry sectors.
Putu explained, industrial salt is used in Chlor-Alkali CAP to produce chlorine, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen through the electrolysis process of salt solutions.
These basic chemical products are an important part of the bleaching process, breaking wood fiber, controlling pH to forming end products in the pulp and paper industries.
"Through this effort, it is hoped that the performance of the pulp and paper industry will further contribute significantly to the national economy," he said.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Pulp and Paper Association (APKI) conveyed the need for support from the government to fulfill industrial salt which is very important for the pulp and paper industry.

Deputy Chairperson of APKI Irsyal Yasman said, the average need for industrial salt for the pulp and paper industry is 760,000 tons per year with a maximum requirement of sodium chloride content of 97 percent, water levels of a maximum of 2.5 percent, calcium a maximum of 0.045 percent and magnesium a maximum of 0.026 percent.
"Unfortunately, currently domestic supplies have not been able to meet these needs consistently, both in terms of quality and quantity," he said.
