JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) opens investment opportunities for the development of the National Salt Industry Center (K-SIGN) in Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province.
"This area will be a model for the development of the national salt industry to support the salt self-sufficiency target in 2027 as mandated by Presidential Decree No. 17 of 2025," said Director General of Marine Management of KKP Koswara as quoted from his written statement, Wednesday, June 18.
With the potential for land of more than 10,000 hectares and ideal climate conditions, six to seven months of dry season per year, Rote Ndao is considered to have a geographical character resemblance to the world-class salt pond location such as in Dampier, Australia.
"KKP targets land productivity to reach 200 tons per hectare per cycle," he said.
The K-SIGN area will be developed in an integrated manner by involving various parties, ranging from the central government, local governments, BUMN such as PT Garam to private investors and opening up job opportunities.
The business models offered include pond management, construction of production facilities, warehouses, washing plants, refinery and an integrated distribution system.
"This is a concrete form of the government's alignment with the national salt industry. Rote Ndao will become the new face of Indonesia's high competitive agriculture," he said.
Koswara added that the area will also become a center for the development of high-value salt downstreaming.
According to him, the construction of K-SIGN in Rote Ndao is projected to absorb up to 26,000 workers and increase people's income by 2.5 times the local UMR.
In addition, the project is expected to reduce dependence on salt imports, which currently still reach more than 2.5 million tons per year for the chemical and food industry.
In the future, Koswara assessed that investment in the K-SIGN project will not only promise economic benefits, but also contribute to national food security.
