JAKARTA - PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN) is now 60 years old, precisely on May 13, 2025. PGN emphasized its role to continue providing natural gas utilization services for Indonesia spread across 18 provinces covering 74 districts in Indonesia.
PGN has controlled 95 percent of the total natural gas infrastructure in Indonesia to serve more than 820,000 customers ranging from the household sector, industry, MSMEs, electricity, to transportation. Control of the natural gas market reaches 91 percent which is fulfilled through the volume of PGN's natural gas distribution of 861 BBTUD along with a transmission volume of 1,602 MMSCFD per quarter of 2025.
PGN Group customers spread from Aceh, North Sumatra, Central and South Sumatra, Batam, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali and East Kalimantan.
Natural gas services from PGN are used by the public for various needs, such as fuel for daily cooking, factory engine fuel in the industrial sector, heating machines, power generation fuel, vehicle fuel, and fertilizer raw materials.
The 60th anniversary is a mementum for PGN to look back at PGN's journey which has combined natural gas infrastructure backbones. PGN's strategic assets in supporting Indonesia's Natural Gas Services include South Sumatra West Java Transmission Pipeline (SSWJ), Arun Belawan Gas Pipeline, West Java Area Pipeline (WJA), Semarang Gresik Pipeline (Gresem), Cisem Pipe Interconnection I with distribution pipelines in Central Java, along with other natural gas support infrastructure.
Not only piped gas, PGN is able to provide non-pipeline natural gas services in compressed Natural Gas (CNG) which is more flexible for households, small businesses and transportation.
Then the use of Liquidized Natural Gas (LNG) to complement natural gas supply sources as operational fuel for industry and electricity. Utilization of LNG facilities continues to be optimized in line with the increase in LNG demand. LNG's regasification performance managed to score a volume of 237 BBTUD or an increase of 39%, thus having an impact on the reliability of supply for the electricity and industry sectors.
In the future, in order to support the distribution of natural gas for the electricity sector, PGN is preparing a plan to meet the potential for electricity supply in Papua clusters. PGN through its subsidiaries has collaborated with several partners to gasify power plants in Papua spread across four locations, namely Jayapura, Nabire, Biak and Manokwari.
Pertamina President Commissioner Mochamad Iriawan said that Pertamina's Oil and Gas Holding boosted PGN to improve clean and efficient natural gas energy services. He is also optimistic that PGN can become the backbone of natural gas distribution, towards the target of connected natural gas infrastructure from North Sumatra to East Java.
In line with the president's aspirations, one of which is self-sufficiency in energy. Pertamina encourages PGN to do its best role to support the government. I am sure, PGN can carry out its strategic mandate as a national development agent through natural gas utilization," said Iriawan at the 60th PGN Anniversary Peak Celebration in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 14.
Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri hopes that PGN can make many breakthroughs to move forward to provide energy solutions for Indonesia. Along with the ongoing transformation, PGN must be innovative and adaptive in accordance with the challenges and needs of the times.
"Pertamina and PGN must also work hand in hand in implementing sustainability values by consistently distributing natural gas as clean energy in the country," said Simon, in a written statement, quoted Friday, May 16.
