JAKARTA - United States President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday (30/11) threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on BRICS countries if they did not cancel plans to use alternative currencies other than the US dollar.
"The idea of BRICS countries trying to get away from the Dollars, while we're just keeping quiet and watching, is TOO", Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, as quoted by Antara.
"We need the commitment of these countries that they will not create a new BRICS Currency, or support other currencies to replace the powerful US Dollar Currency," Trump said.
He stressed that any country seeking to replace the US dollar in international trade would "said goodbye to America".
BRICS is an intergovernmental association formed in 2006. Russia has been the head of the block's rotation since January 1, 2024. This year begins with the entry of new members into the association.
