JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) introduced the concept of sponge City (Spons City) which will be implemented in the capital city of Nusantara (IKN), East Kalimantan.

What exactly is the concept of the City of Spons?

In his explanation, sponge City is a concept of urban water management that makes the city like a sponge that absorbs, stores and manages rainwater effectively.

This concept has been implemented in a number of world cities, such as Shanghai, Auckland, London, Mumbai and Philadelphia.

"The implementation of the sponge City concept aims to reduce flood risk, improve water quality and promote the wise use of water resources in urban environments," wrote the official Instagram upload @kemenpupr quoted Thursday, August 8.

It is known that sponge City can be realized by building green infrastructure such as city parks, green roofs and wetlands. No less important is the improvement of the urban drainage system by using retention ponds, pipelines and the use of technology to collect, filter and utilize rainwater.

The implementation of the sponge City concept at IKN is said to be carried out by building green and blue open spaces evenly and connected to the hydrological system.

Then, apply the design of micro and macro-scale urban facilities. The design of micro-scale urban facilities, for example, by utilizing green roofs on buildings.
