JAKARTA - The Ministry of Trade affirms its commitment to protecting consumers and the domestic steel industry by destroying findings of illegally imported steel worth IDR 6 billion.

Director-General of Consumer Protection and Trade and Order (PKTN) of the Ministry of Trade, Veri Anggrijono in Jakarta, Monday, emphasized that as many as 1,130 illegally imported steel rods were found in PT SS's warehouse in North Jakarta.

"These imported goods were destroyed because they were not equipped with documents according to technical requirements, or the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). Supervision by the Ministry of Trade is also aimed at creating a healthy business climate", he said, quoted from Antara, Monday, March 22.

Veri explained that as many as 237 WF profile steel bars, 158 U-channel bars, and 735 elbow bars, it was found out that there were no documents according to technical requirements or SNI after being supervised.

"Criminal sanctions are processed by the National Police. And, we have (violators) administrative sanctions ranging from oral, written warnings, to revocation of import permits (SPI)", said Veri.

He ensures that illegal goods are destroyed to protect consumers in terms of safety, health, the environment, and protect domestic industries.

Director of Supervision of Circulated Goods and Services of the Directorate General of PKTN Ivan Fithriyanto hopes that this destruction can provide a deterrent effect for business actors who do not comply with the provisions.

This destruction also provides an example for other business actors, especially importers, so as not to import products that pose a risk to security and safety aspects.

He hopes that this activity of withdrawing and destroying products that are not by SNI will also have a positive impact on improving product quality in the future.

Since 2012, the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Trade have imposed mandatory and special monitoring activities for steel products circulating in the market.

Routine supervision, especially of imported products that do not meet regulations, is also carried out to ensure consumer protection and encourage the use of domestic products.

Previously, the Ministry of Industry noted a decrease in steel imports by 34 percent in 2020, in line with the increasing use of domestic profile steel products.
