Government Targets 15 CCS/CCUS Onstream Projects By 2030

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has set a target of 15 Carbon Capture and Storage and Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS) projects starting operations by 2030.

"Currently, Indonesia has a total of about 15 potential CCS/CCUS projects with an onstream target of 2026-2030. Two basins are being pushed by the Government to be used as CCS Hubs in East Asia and Australia, namely Sunda Asri basins and Bintuni basins," said Director of Upstream Oil and Gas Business Development Ariana Soemanto, Tuesday, July 2.

Ariana said Indonesia is known to have the largest sediment basin in Southeast Asia. Indonesia has the potential for carbon storage resources in 20 basins with a capacity of 573 Giga tons Saline Aquifer and 4.8 Giga Tons suspended oil and gas reservoirs spread across various regions in Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua.

Ariana also explained that the CCS scheme in Indonesia was divided into 2 (two) options. The first option is the holding of CCS based on the Oil and Gas Cooperation Contract, the CCS activity plan can be proposed by the Cooperation Contract Contractors in POD I or continued POD or revision.

Second, CCS can be developed as its own business, through a Carbon Storage Target Injection Zone Exploration Permit and Operation Permit.

To support the development of CCS/CCUS, the Government has also implemented various policies, including the establishment of CCS/CCUS National Center of Excellence together with research institutions and universities, strengthening international cooperation in the CCS/CCUS sector, and drafting derivative regulations and policies.

"Currently, an ESDM Ministerial Regulation (Permen) Number 2 of 2023 has been issued and Presidential Regulation (Perpres) number 14 of 2024 which is the basis for strong law for the development and application of capture and storage of carbon (CCS) in Indonesia," concluded Ariana.
