Ahead Of Ramadan, BPS Asks The Government To Be Aware Of Rice Prices To Cooking Oil

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that there are several commodities such as rice, chicken eggs, and fried currencies that need to be watched out for ahead of the month of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr 2024. This is because these commodities have the potential to experience price spikes during that period.

Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti explained that the food sector was the main contributor to inflation in February 2024 at 0.37 percent on a monthly basis.

He said, inflation that occurred in February 2024 was also relatively higher than the same period in previous years.

"If we look at what happened in inflation in 2024 in M-to-M, then what we need to anticipate is a warning from the data records that we have is rice which contributes 0.21 percent of inflation and 5.32 percent inflation," Amalia said at the Food Supply and Price Security Coordination Meeting Ahead of Fasting and Eid Al-Fitr, at the Kempinski Grand Ballroom, Jakarta, Monday, March 4.

Not only rice, said Amalia, other commodities that contributed greatly to inflation in February were red chilies with a share of 0.09 percent inflation and 17.78 percent inflation itself.

Then, continued Amalia, followed by broiler eggs with donations to inflation of 0.04 percent and inflation itself reaching 3.95 percent.

Furthermore, there is broiler meat which inflations 1.54 percent and contributes to monthly inflation in February of 0.02 percent. Then, cooking oil whose inflation was recorded at 1.09 percent and contributed to inflation by 0.01 percent.

Rice, red chilies, broiler eggs, broiler meat, and cooking oil. These are five commodities that we need to anticipate and we need to be aware of together," he explained.

In fact, said Amalia, rice commodities also contributed a large annual contribution to inflation in February.

"Year on year (yoy) of rice contributed 0.67 percent of inflation and when viewed from 150 regencies/cities of IHK, there were 140 regencies/cities that experienced an increase in rice prices," he said.
