Up 150 Percent, Makassar New Port Capacity So 2.5 Million TEUs

Pelindo increased Makassar New Port (MNP) capacity by 150 percent from the original 1 million TEUs (20 feet of container) to 2.5 million TEUs.

"Pelindo is building Eastern Indonesia through MNP by increasing MNP capacity by 150 percent," said Regional Head 4 Pelindo Enriquey Muis as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, January 5.

He said the loading and unloading achievement was always above 100 percent of the target, because it was supported by MNP facilities.

Meanwhile, the progress of the MNP development of heavy equipment has started to leave the MNP 1B and 1C areas since last September 2023.

The completion of the 1B and 1C stages of construction made the terminal capacity of the MNP container increased by 150 percent, from the original 1 million TEUs (20 feet) to 2.5 million TEUs.

Makassar New Port was built because the container terminal at Soekarno Hatta Port with a capacity of 700 thousand TEUs is optimal. If there is no additional capacity or construction of a new port, Soekarno-Hatta will face a congestion in 2019.

The government then established the MNP National Strategic Project (PSN). The groundbreaking of the port which is located about five kilometers from Soekarno Hatta was carried out by President Joko Widodo in May 2015.

MNP Phase 1A began operating in November 2018. However, the container terminal, now known as the New Makassar Container Terminal (Terminal 2), has also reached the optimum point.

Enriany said the New Makassar Container Terminal (Terminal 2) always noted that the average loading and unloading activity was above 100 percent.

The achievement of loading and unloading of goods in November 2023, for example, reached 121.3 percent compared to the 2023 Company Work Plan and Budget (RKAP).

In 2023, initially Pelindo Regional 4 set RKAP for loading and unloading flow of 193,287 TEUs.

However, seeing the heavy flow of loading and unloading in early 2023, Pelindo then raised the target in the 2023 RKAP Amendment to 212,675 TEUs.

"As of November 2023, the flow of loading and unloading at Makassar New Port has penetrated 257,981 TEUs," said Enrique.
