Deputy Minister Of Foreign Affairs At The ASEAN Forum: Indonesia's Renewable Energy Potential Is Not Only In The Electricity Sector

JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Wamenlu) Pahala Mansury said that Indonesia continues to strive to develop green infrastructure to achieve its emission reduction target.

He said the government was committed to reducing emissions by 31.9 percent by 2030 with a national capacity of 43.2 percent with international support.

"Indonesia has the potential to build 22 GW of geothermal power, 75 GW of hydropower, solar power and biomass around 6.6 GW, and wind power around 60.6 GW," he said in a series of ASEAN Summit agendas in Jakarta, Wednesday, September 6.

According to Pahala, our electricity development plan for 2022-2030 is the first plan with a commitment to increase the electricity capacity of renewable resources.

"However, Indo has more potential in developing renewable energy than just in the field of electricity," he said.

Pahala explained, this can be seen in the development of biofuels, biomasses, and other environmentally friendly molecules such as green hydrogen. He said that in 2023 Indonesia had developed B35, replacing about 35 percent of our diesel oil. Recently Pertamina also launched environmentally friendly first-friendly which targets to be able to reach E20 by 2030.

"We also launched an electric vehicle ecosystem with about 26 percent of the world's resources in the form of nickel, indo has ambitious plans to make batteries with a capacity of more than 140 GWh by 2030. Other Asean member countries also have great potentials such as the Philippines which has very significant potential in the nickel sector," he said.

Pahala added, to be able to develop a more cohesive electric vehicle ecosystem, all parties need to connect industrial clusters in the ASEAN region. This is also one of the important results of today's ASEAN Summit, namely how to connect ASEAN member countries through what we call the ASEAN Network.

Finally, the development of the ecosystem and production capacity will not be realized without connectivity between ASEAN member countries. Therefore, building environmentally friendly ports and environmentally friendly storage of molecules such as environmentally friendly hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel is one of the key elements in developing a more cohesive ecosystem and regionalizing the supply chain of the electric vehicle ecosystem," he explained.

One example, there is a growing hydrogen market that will create around 1.4 trillion markets by 2050 and therefore Indo is currently pushing for this initiative.
