JAKARTA PT Bank Central Asia Tbk. (BCA) is known to be getting closer to being involved in the distribution of digital rupiah initiated by Bank Indonesia (BI). Later, BCA will become a wholesaler bank to the public in the 4.0 technology-based transaction scheme.

The clarity is getting clearer with the direct confirmation of the President Director (Presdir) of BCA Jahja Setiaatmadja earlier this week.

"BI has been summoned for direction as a wholesaler," Jahja told VOI after the launch of the 2022 Bank Indonesia Transparency and Accountability Report (LTABI).

Jahja revealed that he was interested in being able to participate in the implementation of digital currencies in Indonesia. Even so, he was reluctant to provide further information regarding the results of the meeting with the monetary authority considering the full decision was in Bank Indonesia.

"So far there has been no appointment from BI," he said.

Jahja added that the company is ready to actively contribute to the distribution of digital rupiah to the community. The reason is, BCA is known to be quite qualified to facilitate customers' finances because it has a strong transaction banking background.

In addition, he believes that digital payment schemes have the potential to boost business performance in the future.

"If it has been appointed, of course we will develop it," he said.

For information, the development of digital rupiah is already in the White Paper stage which was released on November 30, 2022. White Paper itself is the initial presentation of the Garuda Project in the form of a high-level design of digital rupiah as well as a form of communication to the public regarding the plan to develop this new transaction.

BI Governor Perry Warjiyo plans to present the latest progress by issuing Proof of Concept (PoC) which contains more details of future financial transactions as the basis for developing countries.

"About July we will issue Proof of Concept for digital rupiah," said Perry.
