JAKARTA - Carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) technology is a technology option to help achieve net zero emissions (NZE).

CCUS' contribution to the cumulative CO2 emission reduction in the energy sector is targeted at around 15 percent.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said that only CCUS technology can overcome emissions from these existing assets by retrofitting these assets with CO2 capture facilities and injecting them into geological formations.

Head of Lemigas Ditjen Migas Ariana Sumanto said that his party has played an active role in preparing the CCUS project pilot to date.

During the long journey of CCUS studies, the Task Force of the Directorate General of Oil and Gas also collaborated with several partners from within and outside the country such as Pertamina EP, ITB, Mitsubishi, Shell, Total, Japex, and ADB. Based on a study conducted by LEMIGAS, Indonesia has the potential to store around 2 Gigatons of CO2 in South Sumatra and West Java.

"Lemigas continues to play an active role in conducting studies and contributing to the preparation of CCUS pilot projects. Also supports the development of CCUS technology in Indonesia and supports the achievement of Net Zero Emission," he told the media, Monday, December 12.

Meanwhile, the Daily Executive of the Exploitation Testing Coordinator, Yohanes B Doi added, currently Lemigas together with Pertamina URTI and Japex are preparing the CCUS project pilot in the Sukowati field.

This study activity includes pilot and commercial-scale CCUS design on the Sukowati field, CO2 supercritical pipeline transport design for CPU and field-scale CCUS, outreach public studies for CCUS-EOR and conducting risk assessment and geological integrity and preparing project pilots for Sukowati's field caprock formation.

In addition, Lemigas has been given a mandatory assignment to update the calculation of CO2 storage capacity in a colliding aquifer by the Directorate General of Oil and Gas.

"With the support of competent human resources and advanced laboratory technology, Lemigas continues to innovate for the realization of Net Zero Emissions, making the earth cleaner and healthier," he concluded.
