PT PLN (Persero) has succeeded in reducing 32 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions throughout 2022. This achievement was conveyed by PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo in the Decarbonizing Energy Sector for Net Zero Indonesia Pavilion agenda at COP 27 which was held in Egypt on Monday 7 November. "I am here proud to say that this year we succeeded in reducing 32 million metric tons of C02 emissions. Overcoming our NDC target," Darmawan explained. He explained, in achieving this, PLN took a holistic approach, namely increasing the capacity of renewable energy plants (EBT), processing exhaust gas into electrical energy, using more efficient coal generation technology, and implementing biomass co-firing. "We did our best and moved as far as we could. Last year, 13 gigawatts of coal plants, which are still in planning, were removed so as to prevent us from 1.8 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions over the next 25 years," he said. Darmawan admits that these various businesses are still not enough, so PLN needs to add greater space to increase the portion of EBT generators. Considering that currently PLN continues to increase the use of EBT plants based on solar power, geothermal, hydro, and waves. "We are aggressively increasing the utilization of EBT. So that we will maximize any existing EBT potential. At the same time, we need to increase the technology capacity to accommodate supply-demand fluctuations for the new system," he added. Therefore, to achieve the NZE target in 2060, PLN is making a holistic approach through 8 initiatives currently being carried out by PLN. The initiative consists of early retirement of fossil plants, hydrogen and ammonia co-firing project pilots, adding renewable energy plants (EBT), green energy services, biomass co-firing, carbon capture storage initiation, smart grid control system launch, and building electric vehicle ecosystems. In addition, Darmawan also emphasized that global warming is a common challenge. Therefore, it requires joint strategy and collaboration from all over the world, from technology, innovation, to investment. "Our paradigm must change. The only way out is with collaboration," he explained.
