JAKARTA - Minister of Transportation (Menhub) Budi Karya Sumadi said the number of accidents during the 2022 homecoming event had decreased by 40 percent.

"Accidents have decreased by 40 percent. In fact, deaths have decreased by 72 percent, so a very significant number in the number of accidents," Budi said in a virtual press conference from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube, Tuesday, May 24.

Budi explained that the decrease in the number of accidents during this year's homecoming event was due to the decrease in the number of travelers using motorbikes.

In addition, he continued, there was also a decrease in homecoming transportation using tourism buses.

"We know that tourist buses are used AKAP buses that are used individually and sometimes they are not tracked. Is the driver right, the bus is right, it is not traceable," he said.

Budi added that the decrease in the number of accidents in this year's homecoming event was because people obeyed the advice issued by the Transportation Ministry.

"We also appeal to the Regional Police and the Transportation Agency to carry out low enforcement of tourist buses because tourist buses are dangerous," he said.

Previously, it was reported that the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) asked people not to go home for Eid on a motorbike because the level of risk of accidents is greater.

For this reason, the government through the Ministry of Transportation also provides free homecoming for Leberan 2022.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation Adita Irawati said that the number of homecomers this year is predicted to increase by 40 percent compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019.

Therefore, the government continues to ensure the readiness of facilities and infrastructure ahead of the 2022 Leberan homecoming period.

With the high number of homecomers this year, Adita said the Ministry of Transportation also ensures that travelers with two-wheeled vehicles can be reduced.

Given that from the safety aspect, going home on a motorbike is very risky.

"We ensure that travelers who use two-wheeled vehicles are reduced. If possible, don't (go home by motorbike), because the safety aspect of going home for two-wheeled vehicles will be very risky," he said in a virtual press conference, Monday, April 18.

Another risk factor, continued Adita, is the weather conditions during the homecoming trip.

The government also provides free homecoming so that travelers will be safer and safer to their destination.
