JAKARTA - Director Chloe Zhao made history as the first Asian woman to win a Golden Globe award as Best Director.

Zhao received an award for his work through the film Nomadland. This film is adapted from a book of the same name by Jessica Bruder.

Nomadland tells the journey of a woman named Fern (Frances MacDonald) in a van after leaving her job and leaving her husband. He travels in a van in search of work.

Filming for the film took place in 2018 at a time when Zhao was also working on Marvel's Eternals.

Prior to winning the Golden Globe award, Nomadland had made a number of achievements. This film is the first film to win the top prize at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival 2020.

Critics and audiences also responded positively to this film. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave 94 percent of the 316 critics.

Chloe Zhao's victory as the first Asian woman was greeted with great fanfare throughout the world. In China his name is known as the adopted son of veteran actor Song Dandan.

Not only the first Asian director, Chloe Zhao is also the second female director to win a Golden Globe. Previously, this achievement was achieved by Barbra Streisand for the film Yentl in 1983.

In this nomination, Zhao competed with David Fincher, Regina King, Emerald Fennell, and Aaron Sorkin.

Even before the top event of the 2021 Golden Globe, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made history by placing three female director nominations in the Best Director category. Previously, the nominations for Best Director were filled with only one female director.
