President Jokowi Respects Reform Trust, Rejecting 3 Periods

JAKARTA - The discourse on the amendment of the 1945 Constitution has resurfaced in line with the issue of extending the term of office of the president to 3 terms. A spokesperson for the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadjroel Rachman, said that the amendments to the law were the territory of the MPR RI. According to him, the government is not involved in it.

"But the president, he has twice said he does not agree with first, the president for three terms. Second, the extension of the term of office," said Fadjroel in a virtual discussion, Saturday, August 28.

Fadjroel emphasized that President Jokowi still upholds the 1945 Constitution which mandates that the presidential position is only sufficient for 2 periods.

"He is upright with the 1945 Constitution. Then he also respects the mandate of the 1998 reformation because the two-term president is a masterpiece of the 1998 reform and democracy movement," said Fadjroel.

Separately, Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly, Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW), asserted that the MPR had no intention of changing the president's term of office to three terms.

"So far, the intention or discourse to change the term of office of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to three terms has never come from the MPR," said Hidayat, Saturday, August 28.

This senior PKS politician said that the discourse on increasing the term of office of the President came from former leaders of political parties and survey activists.

"There have appeared from outside the DPR/MPR such as individual survey activists, former party leaders, and others. But from the MPR, let alone official ones, there are none. Let's guard and implement the 1945 Constitution," said HNW.
