Awesome Waterspout In Banyuwangi Waters

BANYUWANGI - The natural phenomenon of a waterspout or vortex in the sea occurs in the waters north of Banyuwangi or the Bali strait. The waterspout happened this afternoon.

This video of the whirlwind in the sea is circulating on social media. Meanwhile, the acting head of the Banyuwangi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Abdul Kadir, said that this phenomenon occurred in about two minutes.

"This is at sea, there are no victims and it's finished", he said when contacted on Wednesday, June 16.

Abdul Kadir said that if a vortex occurs on land, it is called a tornado. Tornadoes should be wary of residents.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Banyuwangi BMKG (Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency) Forecasting Group, Gede Agus Purbawa, said that waterspouts were a common occurrence. Waterspout usually occurs in a short time.

"Basically the same as a tornado that occurs on land. The duration is short and ordinary events", he said.

He said the waterspout could be triggered by the presence of cumulonimbus clouds. From the results of the BMKG analysis, the sea surface temperature in Banyuwangi at that time was warm.

"This sea temperature is related to oceanography, it can be influenced by deep ocean currents to exposure to sunlight", he said.
