Bromo Mountain Fire Still Not Extinguished, 10 Acres of Land Burned

JAKARTA - The forest and land fires (karhutla) in Mount Bromo, East Java, have not been extinguished with an estimated area of burned land reaching 10 hectares. Joint officers continue to try to extinguish the flames that continue to spread using makeshift manual tools.

"Based on reports from field officers, the current condition of the fire point is still not extinguished, so officers continue to make efforts to extinguish the fire points," said Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Probolinggo Regency, Oemar Sjarief, as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 5.

The Probolinggo Regency BPBD Rapid Response Team personnel together with the East Java BPBD, Perhutani, TNI/Polri, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) Headquarters, East Java Disaster Management Agency, volunteers and the community united to put out the forest fire in the Bromo Mountain tourist area.

"The fire-fighting tools (kepyok) owned by the officers were all damaged because they were used massively when extinguishing the forest fire, but the officers still put out the fire using the available tree branches," he said.

In addition to the fire truck, he continued, the joint officers used a backpack sprayer to put out the fire which continued to spread to other locations due to strong winds and dry reeds which are easily flammable.

The joint team also monitors the movement of the fire point and carries out blocking so that the fire does not spread to other areas, so that it is hoped that the fire can be extinguished and the area of the burned land does not spread further.

The area of the forest fire in Mount Bromo, which is a TNBTS area, has increased from 7.9 hectares to 10 hectares, but it is likely to increase because the fire point has not been extinguished 100 percent.

The forest fire has an impact on the closure of part of the Bromo Mountain tourist area, which is one of the mainstay destinations in East Java, because the TNBTS Headquarters closed access to the Bromo Mountain from the Jemplang and Coban Trisula entrances in Malang Regency and Senduro in Lumajang Regency to maximize efforts to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety aspects of all tourists.

The closure of the three accesses was carried out since Monday (3/8) at 22.00 WIB until the time limit has not been determined, but tourists can visit Mount Bromo from the Cemoro Lawang entrance in Probolinggo Regency and Wonokitri in Pasuruan Regency with limited areas.
