NIAS SELATAN - The Ministry of Culture encourages the Bawomataluo Village in South Nias, North Sumatra, to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The indigenous village, which still maintains the megalithic tradition, is considered to have a strong uniqueness to get international recognition.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon said the proposal process requires a long phase. However, the cultural wealth that is still alive in the community is the main capital of Bawomataluo.

"What is here is very unique. The megalithic culture that is still alive today is a heritage of cultural heritage that we must protect together," said Fadli when opening the Bawomataluo Expo IV 2026 in Bawomataluo Village, Monday, July 27.

Bawomataluo Village has been designated as a National Cultural Heritage. This area is known for its rows of Omo Hada traditional houses, the Fahombo tradition or stone jumping, and megalithic stones used in various traditional ceremonies.

According to Fadli, Bawomataluo is an example of living cultural heritage because the tradition is not only stored as a legacy, but is still carried out by the community until now.

The Ministry of Culture will strengthen support for the application process to UNESCO. Fadli said that the protection and development of culture is also a mandate of Article 32 paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution.

The Regent of South Nias, Sokhiatulo Laia, asked for the support of the central government to continue to be strengthened. He hopes that UNESCO's recognition can increase cultural preservation as well as increase the attractiveness of the region's tourism.

"We hope that the presence of the Minister of Culture will have a positive impact on the development of culture in South Nias Regency and support the realization of Bawomataluo Village as a UNESCO World Heritage Site," he said.

Bawomataluo Expo IV will last until August 2, 2026. The festival features traditional dances, rock-jumping attractions, craft exhibitions, music, and various expressions of Nias culture.

Fadli asked that this activity be developed into an annual agenda. The festival is expected to provide space for local artists and communities, as well as to stimulate the economy through art, carving, handicrafts, and cultural tourism.

In this activity, Fadli received the customary title "Tuha Sanora Sihono" from the Bawomataluo Custom Institution. The title was given in honor of his commitment to the protection and preservation of the culture of Nusantara.
