JAKARTA - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) asked tourists to stay away from the crater area in Mount Kelimutu, Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, even though there was a decrease in the temperature of the lake water in crater II or known as Tiwu Ko'ofai Nuwamuri.

Acting Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria said based on the latest measurement results, the water temperature in the crater had dropped from 35 degrees Celsius to 33.2 degrees Celsius.

The temperature decrease was obtained from field measurements and observations of the Agency team conducted by the Agency's technical team on July 4, 2026, after being compared with previous measurement data on June 30, 2026.

Despite the decrease in water temperature, the Geological Agency noted that the color of the lake water at Crater II was observed not to change and still maintained a consistent light green color since mid-June 2026.

Lana Saria confirmed that the trend of decreasing water temperature in Kawah II was also not followed by significant changes in seismic activity or smoke height above the surface of the crater lake.

Based on periodic visual observation reports, the water in Lake Kawah I was recorded as a greenish color, the water in Lake Kawah II was a light green, while the water in Lake Kawah III showed a dark green color.

Until now, the level of volcanic activity from the volcano which is famous for the beauty of the three-colored lake in the crater is still pegged at Level I with a Normal status.

Considering that Mount Kelimutu is a tourist volcano destination with a fairly high number of tourist visits, the Geological Agency has issued a number of important recommendations to maintain public safety.

The public around Mount Kelimutu as well as visitors and tourists are urged not to approach the edge area of the crater, especially at the II Crater object, to increase vigilance against the potential of a phreatic eruption that can occur at any time.

The Geological Agency also asked the local government together with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to continue to improve coordination with the Kelimutu Volcano Observation Post in Kampung Kolorongo, Waturaka Village, Ende Regency, as well as the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
