JAKARTA - The Ministry of Culture (Kemenbud) and the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) have begun to formulate joint steps to strengthen the protection of cultural works in the era of artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligence/AI). One of the focuses is to prepare AI regulations that are in favor of the protection of artists' works while strengthening the Indonesian digital culture ecosystem.

The commitment emerged in a meeting between Minister of Culture Fadli Zon and Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid at the Ministry of Culture Office, Jakarta, Tuesday (30/6).

Fadli emphasized that digital transformation should not separate technology from cultural identity. According to him, digitalization should actually be an instrument to expand the preservation and promotion of culture.

"Culture and Komdigi have a very close relationship. In the midst of the development of world civilization, now there must be digital intervention," said Fadli.

He said the Ministry of Culture had developed various digital programs, ranging from museum and cultural heritage video content competitions, Gala Cerita Rakyat, Letters to Heroes, museum digitization with immersive technology, video mapping, interactive screens, to the Media Art Community Festival which combines art and technology.

The government is also continuing to accelerate the protection of cultural heritage. To date, Indonesia has 2,727 Intangible Cultural Heritage which are important assets for the development of the cultural economy and the national cultural industry.

During the meeting, the two ministries agreed to strengthen collaboration, ranging from the preparation of AI regulations, cultural data protection, cultural promotion through digital platforms, to expanding public access to Indonesian cultural products.

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said digital transformation must go hand in hand with strengthening the nation's character.

According to him, around 227 to 230 million Indonesians or around 80 percent of the population have been connected to the internet. This condition is a big opportunity as well as a challenge to make the digital space used productively without neglecting cultural values.

"Digital transformation must be able to maintain the character and cultural values while providing benefits to the community," said Meutya.

He also hopes that the Ministry of Culture will support the implementation of Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in the Protection of Children (PP TUNAS). One of them is by presenting more cultural activities as a positive alternative for children outside the digital space.

The collaboration between the two ministries is expected to be a foothold in building a digital ecosystem that not only encourages innovation, but also protects cultural works and strengthens Indonesia's identity in the midst of technological developments.
