JAKARTA - The Chinese government announced that it would provide humanitarian assistance worth a total of 100 million RMB (about Rp224 billion) to help earthquake victims in Venezuela, including for the reconstruction process.

"The Chinese government has decided to provide emergency supplies worth 100 million RMB that will be sent to Venezuela immediately to support disaster relief and reconstruction efforts," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun at a press conference in Beijing, Monday (29/6).

Venezuela was shaken by two strong earthquakes on Wednesday afternoon (24/6) local time, with a magnitude of 7.2 and 7.5 with a time interval of only 39 seconds.

As of Sunday (28/6), President of the Venezuelan National Assembly Jorge Rodriguez said the total number of deaths reached 1,450 people, more than 3,150 people were injured and 12,721 people were displaced or affected by the disaster.

Guo Jiakun said President Xi Jinping had also sent a message of sympathy to Acting President Delcy Rodríguez regarding the disaster.

"China also provides satellite images of the earthquake-affected areas to support disaster management operations," said Guo Jiakun.

In addition, Chinese companies and associations of overseas Chinese in Venezuela have voluntarily donated much-needed machines and medical supplies.

The magnitude 7.5 quake was centered about 23 kilometers southeast of Yumare, in Yaracuy state, while the magnitude 7.2 quake occurred about 23.9 kilometers northeast of San Felipe, which is also in Yaracuy state, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
