JAKARTA - A new case of suspected H5 bird flu has been detected in Western Australia, potentially marking the fifth confirmed or suspected detection of the virus in the country.

The latest alleged case involves a giant petrel found at Roses Beach near Esperance, according to an ABC News report.

Samples have been sent to laboratories for testing. Another suspected case near Dunsborough is also awaiting test results.

So far, Australia has confirmed two cases of H5 avian influenza in migratory seabirds in Western Australia and one in South Australia, while two suspected cases have occurred in Western Australia.

Western Australia's Agriculture Minister Jackie Jarvis said there was currently no evidence the virus had spread to local wildlife or poultry.

"There have been no detections in poultry, and no reports of mass deaths," Jarvis said.

Of the five giant petrels reported at Roses Beach, only one showed a suspected positive result, while the other four showed negative results, a development officials said showed no evidence of disease transmission on the Australian mainland.
