JAKARTA - Poland and Germany signed a new military cooperation agreement without mutual security guarantees, and the two defense chiefs, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz and Boris Pistorius, were present at the signing ceremony.
The document replaces a framework agreement on defense cooperation between the two countries that has been in force for 15 years.
"We are laying another foundation for security, and there is no European security without Poland or without Germany. Today's agreement opens up new space for cooperation," Kosiniak-Kamysz said after the signing ceremony, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, June 18.
The new agreement provides opportunities for cooperation in the field of cyber security, joint command in the Baltic region, new technologies, including space, and opens up further possibilities in mobility and the development of military infrastructure.
Based on the agreement, German armed forces will support the Polish army in protecting the country's eastern borders, Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
Earlier that day, Polish media reported that, at Poland's initiative, the document did not include security guarantees beyond existing commitments under NATO or EU treaties.
The decision was made by Poland, even though Germany was ready to sign a broader agreement, the report said.
The agreement will allow German engineering troops to operate in Polish territory as part of the Eastern Shield operation.
In December 2025, Bild reported that the mission would consist of dozens of military personnel tasked with building trenches, installing barbed wire, and creating anti-tank barriers.
