BOGOR - President Prabowo Subianto has requested the latest report on the development of cooperation and management of rare earth metals (rare earth) amid increasing global competition for critical minerals for the technology industry.
The request was conveyed in a meeting with the Minister of Higher Education and Science and Technology at the Garuda Yaksa Training Center, Hambalang, Bogor, Wednesday (17/6).
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the President specifically asked for the development of a number of cooperation related to technology and rare earth metals.
"In addition to human resource management, he also asked for an update on several cooperation related to technology and rare earth metals," said Prasetyo.
Rare earth metals are an important component in the production of electric vehicles, batteries, semiconductors, wind turbines, defense systems, and various modern electronic devices.
In recent years, this mineral has become one of the strategic commodities that many countries are competing for because of its crucial role in the global technology supply chain.
The request for a report from the President is considered to show the government's attention to Indonesia's opportunities to take a greater position in the world's critical mineral industry, especially through strengthening research, processing technology, and international cooperation.
Apart from the aspect of resource management, the government also pays attention to human resource readiness and technology development so that the added value of strategic minerals can be enjoyed domestically.
The discussion took place in conjunction with the agenda for monitoring various priority government programs carried out by the President together with the relevant ministers.
