JAKARTA - The US Ambassador to ASEAN, Kevin Kim, stated that ASEAN remains a strategic partner and a top priority in the US government's efforts to carry out various agendas in the Indo-Pacific region.
"Because of the leadership of the President and his ability to design an agreement with ASEAN, the United States and ASEAN were able to reach an agreement on a joint vision statement," Kim said at a press conference "Independence Day 2026: 250 Years of American Independence" in Jakarta, Thursday night.
According to Kim, the US approach to ASEAN covers various strategic issues such as critical minerals, artificial intelligence (AI), future technologies, as well as regional norms and values that are of common concern to ASEAN member countries and the US.
The US is said to have a strong desire to work with ASEAN and ASEAN member countries on all of the issues mentioned.
Kim continued that before he left Washington, a number of senior US government officials confirmed that the Southeast Asian region would play an important role in determining the direction of world development in the 21st century.
"And that is why US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau is here today, meeting with the ASEAN Secretary-General," he said.
The US Embassy held an event "Independence Day 2026: 250 Years of American Independence" in Jakarta on Thursday evening.
In his opening remarks, US Ambassador to ASEAN, Kevin Kim, said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the story of the 21st century would be written in the Indo-Pacific.
"We hope to write that story with all our friends in ASEAN in the next few years," Kim said, adding that he hoped for US-ASEAN cooperation in advancing peace, prosperity, and stability in the region.
The event was attended by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.
The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Stella Christie, and Special Envoy for Climate and Energy President Hashim Djojohadikusumo were also present at the event.
