JAKARTA - The United States military has completed a self-defense attack against Iran in response to the shooting down of a US Apache helicopter, according to the US Central Command (US CENTCOM).
"CENTCOM forces attacked Iranian air defenses, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz with precision munitions from US Air Force and Navy fighter jets," CENTCOM said on social media X, launching CNN (10/6).
The US military said the attack marked a "proportional response" to recent attacks on US forces and international vessels in the region.
As previously reported, President Donald Trump said that an Apache helicopter crashed in the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by Iranian fire. He said it would get a response, but also said it was not a big deal.
US CENTCOM then in a post on the social media X announced that the US military launched a new wave of attacks against Iran on Tuesday, which was described as a "defensive attack."
A US official told CNN that this new attack was intended as a warning shot to Iran and that the US believed the attack would not hinder negotiations to end the war.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy later announced the US carried out attacks on Jask, Sirik, and Qeshm, which was in line with several other Iranian government media reports on the attacks.
The IRGC further said the US attack allegedly damaged a communication tower in Sirik and destroyed two water reservoirs in the Bamani district, according to Tasnim news.
Governor Minab clarified in a later update, "no attack was reported against the city," according to Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency.
The sound of the explosion heard in the inland city came from a coastal road bordering the Strait of Hormuz and not from Minab itself.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said no US attack would be left "unanswered", after the US launched a new wave of retaliatory attacks against Iran following the downing of an Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC AL then announced that it had launched missiles and drones towards US targets in the Middle East Region.
The IRGC said early Wednesday it targeted the US Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, in response to the US attack on Iran.
"The IRGC Navy forces launched a drone attack at 02.30 am against the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain," said a statement on the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
The IRGC later also claimed to have attacked a US military base in Al Azraq, Jordan in a statement released Wednesday morning.
The Fars News Agency, which is affiliated with the Iranian government, reported that the IRGC attacked the base with a solid-fuel long-range missile and had destroyed a hangar that housed F-35 fighter jets.
In February, the US deployed at least 18 F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters to Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, near Al Azraq.
The Jordanian military later announced that it had intercepted five missiles from Iran.
"We intercepted and shot down five missiles launched from Iran towards Azraq," the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces said in a statement, according to the Jordanian News Agency run by the government.
"The interception resulted in the fall of bullet fragments, without any reported casualties or material damage," the statement said.
