JAKARTA - The number of deaths due to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has exceeded 100, according to official data released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday.

The ministry said 101 people have died of the disease since the outbreak was declared on May 15, with the overall case fatality rate estimated at 18.4 percent, Anadolu (9/6) reported.

Data shows that the cumulative number of confirmed cases has reached 550.

The Ebola outbreak continues to spread and has now affected 25 health zones in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Health said that seven patients recovered during the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 19.

Ituri remains the epicenter of the disease, with 17 of the 25 affected health zones in the province.

According to health authorities, the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus continues to show an increasing trend every week.

They said the recent small dip in the epidemic curve may be related to a delay in updating laboratory data.

"Monitoring activities, case management, and efforts to increase public awareness continue in the affected areas," the ministry said.
